A Sunny day of Racing on the South Coast

Organised by Poole Gig Rowing Club and sandwiched between two inclement weather systems on Friday and Sunday which led to Sunday’s adventure rowing being cancelled, the event was a joy. Over 21 Clubs and 59 crews competed over 6 races and there were plenty of opportunities to scan the wonderful scenery (or keep your head in the gig and purposely race, ahem.)

We visited the reputedly haunted King Charles Pub on Friday night and listened to their house band: Dirty Tricks, which was nice. Then visited Quay Spice Curry House on Saturday night which was not nice but once the food finally arrived 1.5 hours in, was.

Race Day incorporated two races per crew—a long race (7K for men and 9K for women) and a sprint race (2K for both crews).

Results: Our Men’s Crew in Phoenix came 15th out of 17 fielded, with a time of 51 mins 29 secs . (The winner : Swanage had time of 43 mins 58 secs.)

Our Women’s Crew in Phoenix came 18th out of 20 fielded, with a time of 1 hour, 24 mins, 27 secs. ( The winner : Bridport had a time of 1 hour 1 min 12 secs. )

The rankings are skewed by the fact that some crews did not compete in all categories which I am told by Head Coach does affect the positions. So all to play for next year!

Crews (not in seat Order):

Women’s: Claire Anderson, Claire Mortimer, Kate Prall, Parul Patel, Lee St Clair, Alexa Howe.

Men’s: Matt Denyer, Jordan Robertson, Laurence Oliver, Andy Stuart, Adam Jones, Alex Eaves.

Thank you to all club members that helped to get the gig ready for this event.
